Qualified hours versus bought hours
YouTube's threshold counts qualified public watch time, and its systems and human reviewers look at the whole channel before approving it. Bought hours are not qualified time to count on; they only make a long video look watched.
Formats that build real hours
Video podcasts, long interviews and documentary-style explainers hold British viewers far longer than a short clip. A 45-minute episode watched for 12 minutes on average earns 1,000 hours from 5,000 views; put real effort there.
The February 2027 cut-off
Apply on or after 1 February 2027 and the bar doubles to 8,000 qualified hours in 365 days, while channels accepted earlier keep their status. Bought hours cannot close that gap; plan the uploads that will, starting this winter.
Keep the videos public and long-form
Hours go to public long-form videos only. Switch one to private or unlisted mid-delivery and the order stalls, and YouTube never counts such videos towards the threshold. Shorts Feed watch time never adds to it either.
